Wine description

Black is the wine that started it all for The Ahrens Family, with the first vintage produced in 2008. A classic Swartland red, it is built around Syrah, supported by Carignan for freshness, balance and complexity. Sourced from older vineyards around the Paardeberg and Malmesbury, the wine reflects the rugged character of the Swartland, where decomposed granite and iron-rich shale contribute depth and mineral structure. Natural fermentation, selective whole-bunch inclusion and extended maturation in French oak give Black plenty of character without overwhelming the fruit. Expect dark berries, spice, savoury notes and a firm but elegant structure. A distinctive expression of Swartland Syrah: powerful, earthy and energetic, with enough freshness to remain beautifully drinkable.
