Wine description
Soutsteen is The Ahrens Family’s first wine to bring together two distinctive regions and two varieties: Palomino from the high-altitude Piekenierskloof and Chenin Blanc from Paarl. Palomino thrives in the hot, dry conditions of Piekenierskloof, where cool nights and an elevation of around 700 metres help preserve freshness. Known for its subtle character and distinctive saline quality, the variety brings a unique savoury dimension to the wine. Chenin Blanc is selected from one of the family’s Old Vine Chenin vineyards each year, adding freshness, balance and texture to complement the natural salinity of the Palomino. The name Soutsteen, meaning “Salt Rock”, combines Sout (salt) with Steen, the traditional South African synonym for Chenin Blanc. The result is a fresh, mineral and food-friendly white with a distinctly savoury personality.
